Big creators absolutely love to preach about complex editing tricks, visual hooks, and the secret to going viral. They tell you to use Trial Reels. They tell you to find viral content in your niche and just adapt it.
Guess what? I did all of that. And I sat there with exactly 42 followers, getting 100 views on every single one of the 3 to 5 Reels I was exhausting myself posting every single day for a month. 🤡
I looked for popular Reels in my niche (which is Instagram growth). And of course, I was looking at massive creators—people with 100k, 500k, or a million followers. Their Reels were all about how to write the perfect script or how to make trendy captions.
I actually made Reels exactly like that at the very beginning of my journey (you can still find them way down at the bottom of my feed!). I tried to squeeze everything I wanted to say into one minute. But nobody—and I mean nobody—watched past the 5 to 7-second mark.
It was a complete disaster. It was awful. You have no idea how much time I wasted filming those first Reels! I had different camera angles, professional lighting... and don't even get me started on the editing! Adding trending audio, doing that trendy zoom in and out. And literally, nobody watched past 7 seconds!!! 📉
That’s when it hit me. Complex topics like scripting, advanced editing, and fancy caption fonts? That is not what actually worries beginner creators like us. We can worry about all that aesthetic editing and multi-angle filming later—when we actually hit 10k!
In the very beginning, our struggles are purely psychological. I was terrified of filming myself. I hated how I looked on camera. I am not 20 anymore, and all these other creators look so young and flawless!
I had no idea what to talk about. I couldn't nail down my topics. And I didn't even know who I was talking to—"women in their 30s and 40s"? Okay, but who exactly?
So, I started making "talking head" Reels about those exact struggles. My fears, my doubts, and how I was surviving them.
And here is the crucial part: I started writing super short scripts. I made sure my Reels were only 15 to 25 seconds long! This massively boosts your retention rate. Think about it: if someone drops off after 7 seconds, they still watched half of a 15-second Reel. To Instagram's algorithm, watching 50% of a video is a huge green light—it means the content is engaging. But if they only watch 7 seconds of a 60-second video? The algorithm trashes it.
My views got a tiny bit better, and I started trickling in 1 or 2 followers at a time. That is exactly how it took me a whole month to get from zero to 42 followers. And honestly, a lot of those Reels still brought in absolutely zero people. 🫠
So I had to dig deeper. Who exactly is my audience? Not just a faceless crowd, but who is that one specific woman who will actually care about my content? Who will find it valuable, who might need to hear it during a really dark season, or whose life it might actually change?
I realized I needed to picture her in 3D. It’s not just that she wants to grow on Instagram. She isn’t just looking for editing hacks (honestly, I’ve noticed male creators are usually the ones hunting for purely technical tools).
We women are wired differently. We just want to feel understood. We want someone to speak our language.
So I asked myself: what keeps women like me awake at night? What worries me at 38, with 4 kids, in a really tough life situation, surviving depression, and moving across two different countries? Especially when building this digital income is literally my only way to provide for my boys? ❤️🩹
That’s when the lightbulb went off. I realized I shouldn't be looking for "Instagram growth" trends at all. I needed to look for women with stories exactly like mine—and see what specific content was making them grow right now.
And this is so important, please remember this! You have to look at creators UNDER 10k. People just like you, who started from absolute scratch and are slowly paving their way. Do NOT look at the ones who accidentally blew up after their first 3 Reels because they caught some crazy algorithm wave. You want the ones who painfully posted 60, 80, or 100+ Reels before they finally hit 1k (for context, my 1k happened on Reel #105, plus a bunch of failed Trial Reels!).
Find those creators, go to their profiles, click their Reels tab, and look for the specific videos that have significantly more views than the rest of their grid.
Look really closely at what those Reels actually are.
I can guarantee you 99% of the time, for beginner creators, it’s going to be a 6-to-8-second video. Just the creator walking somewhere, drinking coffee, fixing her hair, hugging her kids... basically, any super short aesthetic clip of everyday life where you just prop your phone on a tripod (or the floor!) and film yourself.
Here is the secret sauce: you need to put the exact same text on your video that the successful creator used on theirs! Just take a screenshot of their Reel, go to your phone’s photo gallery, and long-press on the text—you can copy it right from the photo without needing any extra apps! Paste it right into your notes. 📝
Now, grab your own video. Pop it into an editing app, trim it down to exactly 6-8 seconds, paste that exact text from your notes, and add the exact same trending audio from that viral Reel (make sure you save their audio so you don't lose it!).
Write a short caption, and make sure you are packing it with SEO keywords for your niche—who are you writing for? Moms, women in their 30s, working moms, women "starting over"... whatever words fit your exact community.
Next, write a short, vulnerable comment about yourself and pin it! This way, when new viewers find you, they instantly connect with you and your story. ✨
Then, leave a second comment asking a question related to the Reel. Ask for their opinion, ask for advice, ask them to share their own experience, or ask which tip in your caption they loved most. Just try to spark a conversation!
Oh, and one more thing. Experiment heavily with the videos you are putting this text over! Instagram's algorithm analyzes the actual visual content, not just your text. Some videos just naturally perform better than others. Try using different video clips with the exact same text. Then try swapping the text on your favorite videos.
Keep testing until you find the exact combo that goes viral for you—and when you find it, DOUBLE DOWN on that format! Tweak the text slightly on your viral video. Use that same text over new videos! Squeeze every single drop out of what works. And never stop researching! 🚀
